West of England Symphony Orchestra

WESO is the West of England Music Alliance’s Youth Orchestra and launched in the summer of 2022 for young people who want to play in a different type of symphony orchestra.

We have taken the traditional youth orchestra model and kept the parts our players wanted to keep. We still play the traditional large-scale orchestral music, contemporary music and key repertoire which all young people should play.

We also take a creative and inclusive approach. The West of England Music Alliance ethos is about creativity. So our youth orchestra is also a creative orchestra, where players make their own music and perform it, as a full symphony orchestra. We also combine with other programmes we produce, such as our creative inclusive band (UnScripted) and our inclusive choir, One Voice. This means that we truly embrace everything we believe about the power of music to transform lives whilst encouraging our players to interact with other musicians from different backgrounds.

If you would like to join, you’ll be an orchestral instrumentalist or grade 6 (or equivalent) and above. We don’t have an age limit, but most of our players are in school year 6 and above. We also accept players up to approx 21 years old, but, where there are limit seats (eg wind/brass) we give priority to players still at school.
